Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes. CatanClock is free to use in your browser. The site may show ads in the future to cover hosting costs, but never on the live game screen.
Do I need an account?
No. Player profiles are stored only on your device. There is no sign-up, and we never ask for an email address or password.
Does it work offline?
Yes, after the first visit. Add it to your home screen for the quickest access. Game data is saved on the phone, so a weak signal does not interrupt a game.
Why does the clock start after the dice roll?
Rolling is quick and everyone watches it. Starting after the roll means the clock measures the part of the turn that actually varies: trading, building and playing cards. It also lets the app record every roll for the dice chart.
What happens when someone rolls a 7?
A separate robber timer runs while players discard, the robber moves and a card is taken. When you tap Robber done, the normal turn clock starts with its full limit. Robber time never counts against the turn.
Which time rule should we use?
Start with Fixed limit at 1:30. If quick players want a reward, switch to Fast-turn bonus. If the late game drags, try Changing limit. Competitive groups who like strategy pacing often prefer the Chess clock.
What is the time bank?
Banked time is used after your turn limit runs out and before overtime starts. With the Fast-turn bonus rule, half of any unused time is added automatically, up to 3:00. You can also give everyone a starting bank in any rule.
Does the timer end a turn automatically?
No. When time runs out the screen turns red and counts overtime. The table decides what to do. Most groups find a visible overtime count is enough motivation.
Can I undo a mistake?
Yes. Undo steps back through rolls, robber, end turn and placements, several levels deep, and restores the clock exactly where it was.
What if my phone locks or the page reloads?
The app asks your phone to keep the screen on during a game (some phones refuse this in battery saver mode). Everything is saved continuously. If the page reloads you can resume, and the game opens paused so nobody loses time.
I hear no sound on my iPhone.
Check the ring/silent switch and the volume. Web audio on iPhone is often muted in silent mode. Also tap anything on the page once so the browser allows sound, then try Preview sounds in setup.
Can every player use their own phone?
Not yet. Today the timer runs on one shared device. Multi-phone play may come later.
Does it support expansions?
The timer works with any version of the game since it only times turns, but it has no expansion-specific features.
Is CatanClock official?
No. CatanClock is an independent fan-made tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by CATAN GmbH, Catan Studio or any related company. CATAN is a trademark of its respective owner.
